WELCOME TO THE PAGESTREAM 3.0h FREE UPDATE! JUNE 28, 1995
===================================================================
Choose Macros/View ReadMe.Now to read this from within PageStream3.
(Requires ARexx.)
This is the eighth free update patch to PageStream3. This update
implements most of the remaining text features such as automatic
hyphenation, paragraph spacing and page numbering. As you can tell
from the Changes list below, this is the most important update yet
and the program is getting much closer to complete!
Typing speed has been improved in this version by 25% in frames with
small amounts of text, and by 300% in frames with large amounts of
text! Many other text speed improvements have been made, including
improved memory handling. Text is still slower than we would like,
but it is definitely better!
Non-PostScript printing speed has been improved in some cases. (See
Technical Notes for details.) We plan to significantly increase the
speed of all non-PostScript black and white (Ordered and Halftone)
printing for v3.1.
PAGESTREAM 3.1
--------------
We plan one more interim update (3.0i). It will finish most of the
remaining object features including the Pen and Reshape tools. After
3.0i, we'll complete 3.0 and renumber it to 3.1. This is the
long-awaited free update. v3.1 will be available online for
approximately one month before we send out any free updates. This
will give us a chance to ensure it's solid before sending out
updates. If you've downloaded the patches, we recommend getting the
3.1 patch so you can get PageStream 3.1 as soon as possible.
After 3.1 is released, that doesn't mean we're going to stop
working. If there are problems in 3.1, we'll fix them in a free
patch that will be available online.
TECHNICAL NOTES
---------------
Non-PostScript printing speed has been improved in some cases. (Most
printing is not sped up, but some printing could be as much as 550%
slower than normal. This will no longer occur.)
Non-PostScript printing is now approximately the same speed whether
you have 1MB of free memory or 10MB free. While we recommend that
users consider additional memory to allow the creation of larger
documents, more memory will not speed up printing.
Documents saved from 3.0h will be somewhat larger than previous
versions due to finalization of default text attributes. (Previous
versions used hard-wired attribute defaults, which meant that if the
defaults were changed, previously created text would change when
loaded. By saving all attributes with each article in a document,
text will not be reformatted when opened in a future version that
has different defaults.)
Cached PostScript equivalents for Compugraphic fonts must be deleted
before printing from 3.0h. (The cached equivalents for fonts
included with PageStream3 will be deleted automatically during
installation of the patch unless you moved the Garamond font.) If
you have added other Compugraphic fonts to PageStream and have
printed them to a PostScript printer, you must delete the cached
PostScript equivalents (they have five digit numbers with .pfb
extensions, ie, 92146.pfb) in order for apostrophes to print
correctly. Don't accidentally delete the similarly named PostScript
fonts in your PageStream3:Fonts/Serials directory.
Due to the implementation of auto kerning for PostScript fonts, it
is possible for line breaks to change slightly when opening old
documents with PostScript text in PageStream3.0h. This change does
not affect Compugraphic or DMF text, which has always been auto
kerned.
TUTORIAL LESSONS
----------------
Lessons 1, 2 and 5 can be successfully completed with this version.
Lessons 3 and 4 cannot be done until version 3.0i is released.
You MUST refer to the manual errata section of the help system for
last minute manual changes before completing the tutorial lessons.
Because the tutorials were designed before the program was complete,
there are important changes which you must be aware of before
starting. (Click on the Manual Errata gadget in the help system's
main contents screen.)
CHANGES FROM 3.0g TO 3.0h
-------------------------
OPENING/SAVING AND IMPORTING/EXPORTING:
- Implemented Revert to Saved.
- Implemented external graphics. FPOs (page 221) are not created
yet, so bitmap pictures must still be imported in their entirety.
File notification is not yet implemented. External text articles
are not implemented yet.
- Fixed a bug that prevented a few users from importing or opening
some files. Symptoms included not being able to open a PageStream2
document or import a graphic from a floppy disk.
- Fixed a bug with loading PageStream2 files that had a type size or
leading set to 0pt, which would cause a crash.
- Fixed canceling of graphic export which gave a recoverable alert.
- Fixed a bug with enforcer hits with AutoSave.
- Fixed a bug that distorted some scaled drawings in documents when
the documents were reloaded.
- Fixed an obscure bug that would hang PageStream when documents
with pictures smaller than 256 bytes were stored at the end of the
document file.
- You can now load larger documents than in 3.0g with the same
amount of free memory. Documents with many frames will also load
faster.
- Removed the "Line has LF" option from the ProWrite import
requester which was not applicable to this format.
- Fixed a problem with colors being added to the palette incorrectly
when importing drawings.
- Fixed the line weight problem with exporting DR2D files.
- Now saves article name and description.
DOCUMENT STRUCTURE:
- Implemented page numbering. Inserting a page number variable now
works as expected.
- Fixed the problem with deleting a master page currently in use.
- Fixed the enforcer hit problem with inserting pages.
- Implemented the keyboard shortcuts for changing pages: Go to Page
(Ctrl G), Go to Last Viewed Page (Shift Ctrl G), Previous Page
(Ctrl J), First Page (Shift Ctrl J), Next Page (Ctrl K), and Last
Page (Shift Ctrl K).
- Added a verification requester for deleting pages.
- Entering out of range values into the New Document requester will
no longer crash PageStream.
TEXT AND FONTS:
- Improved the speed of text typing and formatting. Typing speed has
been improved in this version by 25% in frames with small amounts
of text, and by 300% in frames with large amounts of text! Many
other text speed improvements have been made, including improved
memory handling.
- Implemented Paragraph Spacing.
- Implemented Auto Hyphenation.
- Changed Auto Hyphenation to default to Off instead of On. Changed
the default Auto Hyphenation values from 4,2,2,2,0.5" to 5,3,2,3,
0.25" (order of options in the requester), which we think are more
suitable defaults.
- Implemented Insert Soft Hyphen.
- Implemented hyphenation breaks at dashes and em-dashes.
- Fixed all known insertion point (text cursor) related problems!
The blinking cursor you see on screen will now accurately reflect
where it really is.
- Fixed all known problems with copying and pasting text that led to
incorrect attributes.
- Fixed the crash problem with double/triple clicking to select.
- Fixed the crash problem with Select All.
- Fixed the crash problem with placing the insertion point in an
empty linked text frame.
- In previous versions, text frames consumed 25K per frame. It was
easy to run out of memory when creating a lot of frames. In 3.0h,
you can now create thousands of frames without running out of
memory. Creating large numbers of text frames is also faster now.
- Fixed the line break problem with paragraphs starting with a tab.
- Fixed the problem with using multiple tabs without text at each
tab stop.
- Fixed a problem with reordering and applying tabs.
- Applying attributes to multiple pages of text is much faster now.
- Fixed auto kerning of PostScript fonts.
- Fixed inserting of date and time variables.
- Select All no longer changes the page offset in the window (which
was rather annoying.)
- Fixed disappearing fi, fl, oe, ae... characters in some of the
standard fonts. Non-existant ligatures were being substituted for
these. Updated 'fm' files that solve the problem are included with
this version. If you moved the standard fonts from the
PageStream3:Fonts/StandardFonts directory, you will have to move
the new font files from there to your current directory.
- Fixed several problems with rotated text. Editing of rotated text
does not work correctly in this version, sorry.
- Fixed printing of apostrophes and quotation marks for Compugraphic
fonts.
- Implemented the Manual Kern requester sample display.
- Added a "Remove" gadget to the Manual Kern requester. This removes
the applied manual kerning.
- To remove manual kerning from a block of text, you no longer have
to hold down a Shift key while choosing Manual Kern.
- Moved the overset indicator to directly below the bottom right
corner of overset text frames, and fixed the "hotspot" for picking
up text frame linking.
- Corrected Show Invisibles which displayed the icons below the text
baseline.
- Previous versions of PageStream3 required that lines of text be at
least 0.5" long. Creating text columns narrower than this resulted
in not being able to enter text. The reason for this 'feature' is
to prevent bad typesetting with wordwrap. It has been changed so
that if the minimum line length is greater than half the width of
the column, it is ignored. This means it will still work as
intended for text wrap, but you can now create columns as narrow
as you want.
PRINTING, ALL TYPES:
- Implemented the Print Blank Page option in Print.
- Fixed printing of a range of pages in a chapter.
- Fixed printing of a single chapter.
- Fixed the display of units in the Printing Preferences requester,
which ignored your measurement system default.
- Fixed the distorted aspect ratio problem with bitmap pictures.
- Fixed the distorted aspect ratio problem with landscape printing.
PRINTING, ALL BUT POSTSCRIPT:
- Made a change in memory handling that will not affect some people,
but which will make a huge difference to others some of the time
or all of the time. Non-PostScript black and white printing should
be about one/third as fast as 2.2 overall. Sometimes it could be
five times slower than normal, but this will no longer occur.
- Fixed an enforcer hit problem with printing gradient fills to non-
PostScript printers.
- Fixed the problem printing 180 degree twisted pictures to
non-PostScript landscape.
- Fixed the one pixel offset of bitmap pictures.
- Fixed the corner cropping problem with rotated bitmap pictures.
PRINTING, POSTSCRIPT ONLY:
- PostScript cartridge users: PageStream should now work with the
appropriate cartridge PPD; you should no longer have to use the
General or LaserWriter Plus PPD. (This problem was not a bug in
PageStream; the PPD files have an error in them. Like PageMaker,
our PostScript driver now catches the error in the PPD file.)
- If a PPD can't be loaded, it will now display an alert explaining
why. The information provided by the alert requester should be
reported to the printer manufacturer, because it is their error.
Some Lexmark, Autologic and Varityper PPD files have been found to
have basic errors.
- Fixed the reversed vertical offset for radial fills.
HP PRINTER DRIVER:
- Now remembers your default paper size.
FARGO PRINTER DRIVER:
- Fixed Dye Sub Mono printing, which printed negative.
OBJECTS:
- Clicking anywhere within an object's bounding box will no longer
select it. Object selection now works as explained in the manual.
(Click on the path for unfilled objects, and on the fill or path
for filled objects.)
- Fixed drawing with the Polygon tool.
- Fixed the problem with vertical offset and the problem with the
default rotation value in the Transform requester.
- Moving and resizing a frame now redraws the overset indicator if
applicable.
- Fixed an enforcer hit problem with displaying gradient fills.
- Fixed problems with turning off text wrap.
- Fixed the problem with pulling object size handles over the
opposite size handles (negative resizing).
- Implemented the Filetype gadget of the Object/Information
requester. Graphics imported into versions prior to 3.0h will not
have this information.
- Added four new bitmap fill patterns, which were designed by Duane
Sikkema. Thanks!
COLOR:
- Fixed editing a library-based color which could default to the
wrong color library.
- Editing an imported color now changes it to a non-imported color.
(The "imported" icon will no longer be shown next to it in the
color lists.)
INTERFACE:
- You can now press the Esc key to exit any requester in PageStream3
or BME2 that has a Cancel gadget. Like pressing Return for the
default gadget, the text cursor cannot be in a text gadget when
you press Esc. If it is in a text gadget, press Return to exit the
gadget and then Esc to cancel the requester.
- Added a "Technical Support" command to the Settings menu above
Help. This opens the online help system to the Technical Support
Options section.
- Fixed multiplication and division in text gadgets when using units
other than the current measurement system.
- Changed multiline text gadgets and non-editable text strings to
break lines on slashes and dashes, in addition to spaces. This
prevents unnecessary wordwrap in the Navigator's Tips gadget.
- Corrected the text gadget tab order in the New Document and Edit
Master Page requesters.
- Modified the Tab and Paragraph Format requesters so that 6
characters can be seen in the text gadgets in which you may enter
unicode characters.
- PageStream and BME now accept unaccented characters for keyboard
shortcuts in requesters even if the character has an accent. For
example, you can type "o" instead of "ö". This is not of concern
to users of the English version of PageStream3.
MISCELLANEOUS:
- Fixed the enforcer hit problem with changing screen modes when
objects are selected.
- Fixed the fatal error that occurred when you opened a document or
created a new one and the default view magnification was set to a
percentage size. (Anything other than Full Page or Full Width.)
- Fixed Cut, Copy, Paste, Erase and Undo toolbar buttons.
- Fixed copying of objects between documents which also copied text
style tags.
- The Edit palette is now updated when you undo an action.
- Margin guides for double-sided master pages now work correctly.
- Toggling Show Rulers off no longer redraws the screen.
- The About requester picture (splash screen) was reduced in size by
10%, so it should display more quickly.
- Added two more keyboard shortcuts to the Distribute requester.
SEND TO EDITOR:
- Fixed the problem with losing text codes when sending text to a
text editor such as PageLiner.
- Fixed several problems with the PageStream text code engine that
either didn't import or export attributes correctly. (Paragraph
spacing, widow/orphan, paragraph type.)
- Corrected all send to editor scripts to work properly when
quitting an editor and not just when closing an editor's window.
- Fixed the spell check in PageLiner problem that returned the
article to PageStream with no changes.
- If PageStream3 is run from a Shell, Send to Editor will no longer
output to the Shell that the hotlinked files have been deleted.
- Implemented external graphics when sending pictures to BME. This
means the picture will no longer be exported to ram: if it is
external on your hard drive, thus saving time and memory. It also
uses the real picture name (if available).
MACRO SCRIPTS:
- "Duplicate To Page" is now an internal macro rather than an
external script. There was no need for it to use ARexx, and it's
faster as an internal macro.
- New "Clear Ruler Guides" internal macro. This deletes all guides
set with the Set Guides requester for the current master page.
- Corrected the Open Template macro data for Avery labels size 5162.
- Fixed the "Print Font Specimens" macro problem that prevented the
last page of font specimens from being printed, when the "6 fonts
per page" option was used.
- Generating the first page of font specimens is now faster due to
less redraws.
MACRO RECORDING:
- Fixed recording the insertion of unicode characters in requesters.
An extra backslash is inserted when recording setting the bullet
character in Paragraph Format or the fill character in Tabs so
that these macros can be played back successfully. If the macro is
exported, the second backslash will be removed automatically.
- Fixed recording the playback of another macro. Instead of ignoring
the played back macro as explained on page 341, it will now record
the actions of the macro.
MACRO COMMANDS:
- New commands: setlanguage, revertdocument.
- Added new parameters for: setpagenumbering, getpagenumbering,
setchapternumbering, getchapternumbering, insertnumber,
insertdate, inserttime, insertrevision, insertsoft,
sethyphenlanguage, deletepage.
- Modified parameters for sethyphenation and setligature.
- GetChoice: button 1 is now the default gadget, and button 2 is the
gadget which will be activated by the Esc key.
- AddARexxGadget: the second exit button added will now be the
gadget activated by the Esc key.
- Fixed a problem with changing pages from a macro when no document
windows were open.
HELP SYSTEM:
- Made the tips accessible from the help system's main contents
screen. Note that the tips cannot be wordwrapped in AmigaDOS 2
AmigaGuide, so you will have to scroll the help screen
horizontally to read each paragraph. The tips will be properly
formatted if you have AmigaDOS 3.
- Added a list of clip art companies to the help system. (Accessible
from the main Contents screen.)
- Added more corrections to the manual errata section, and added
marks to indicate which corrections are new in this version.
- Corrected a few help screens that did not link to the correct
sections.
PAGELINER:
- Fixed a problem with using the getarticle macro command during
spell checking.
BME:
- Fixed a bug with the Clone feature. Cloned pictures would crash
BME when closed.
- Fixed the problem with the right half (or more) of a picture being
displayed incorrectly when viewed at less than 100%. This happened
only with less than 24 bit RGB and less than 32 bit CMYK pictures.
- Fixed the potential crash problem with zooming in on pictures that
were less than 24 bit RGB or less than 32 bit CMYK pictures.
- Fixed the incorrect color problem when editing a 24 bit picture,
or converting a picture to 24 bits.
- Move the default path options from the Settings/General command to
the new Settings/Paths command to make BME more like PageStream.
- Editing a palette picture's colors now sets the picture status
indicator.
- Now sets the foreground and background colors correctly when you
convert a picture to another type.
- Can now click in the gray area outside of a picture to deselect an
area.
- You can now use the Backspace key to delete a selected area.
- Improved the Sharpen and Emboss effects. They now work better than
before at the edges of the picture.
- Improved the speed of the Contrast and Brightness effects.

properly redraw the screen, choose Macros/Refresh Window. This
is assigned to F10 as the default.
- For most Canon printers, choose the Epson driver from Printing
Preferences' Type popup gadget.
KNOWN PROBLEMS:
- You cannot apply colors to text using the Color Palette.
- You cannot customize a type style's color/line/fill attributes
within a style tag.
- The Word, WordPerfect, Illustrator EPS and Freehand EPS filters
are not complete. They work to a limited degree but don't support
all attributes or file versions.
- The Line/Fill button in the toolbar cannot be used for text yet;
choose Line/Fill from the Type menu instead.
- You can't copy and paste (or duplicate/transform) text frames.
- There are some unresolved style tag problems. (We had hoped to
fix these in 3.0h, but decided to leave them until next time so
that we could speed up text in this version.)
- Resizing rotated objects does not work as expected.
- Rotated text cannot be edited.
- Typing past the end of a frame will not advance the cursor to
the next frame if the next frame is on another page.
- Spot colors are separated as process colors.
- Applied bold and italics aren't done for all font types yet.
We hope you enjoy using this updated version of PageStream3. We are
committed to giving you the best possible software for your Amiga
computer. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for supporting
Amiga software companies.
